“The world is flat,” said Thomas Friedman, the Pulitzer Prize winning author in his book by the same name. And indeed it is. We usually get mails from startups from the States, the UK, and also recently from Israel. But it’s not always that a startup from Ukraine writes to us. Nevertheless, this startup, Domenames, has an interesting story, and a much more interesting offering for the startups and businesses world over.
Almost all entrepreneurs have gone through the trysts of naming their startups. And some have indeed ended with interesting names. Moreover, businesses today are ready to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to obtain good and unique brand or company name. Because your brand name is the first thing that draws attention and stays in the mind of potential customers. However, choosing the right and successful name is not as easy as it seems. Even if a self-created name at first sight seems quite good, after a while, it usually turns into a source of problems, tending to slow down the development of business.
This is the thought that sowed the seeds of Domenames which was established in March 2012 by two youngsters from Ukraine. Today the team has four members, co-founders Alexey Tsapov and Denis (Den) Eremenko have programmer Andrey Larionov, and advertising manager Alinka Kosteeva, in their team. All four of them have hobbies ranging from singing to cookery, but are obsessed with naming things!
So how do you go about using Domenames’s services?
- Create a description of your business or project and the type of name you need
- Choose your budget
- Proceed with payment information
Once payment has been submitted, the project becomes available to the authors who then work to start proposing different options. The premise of their business lies in the fact that a lot of people find it difficult to properly name products/services or even name their businesses. These entities need to be aligned to the market, and should catch the customers’ eyes. The Domenames team has a pool of professional writers and marketing experts at their disposal. This pool is called upon when a contract arrives. The experts work on the project and deliver it on time. And all this is not limited to naming alone. Domenames also provides support with copyrighting the name and the intellectual property. The author who works on giving the startup its name gets the bulk of revenues, after, of course deducting the commission of Domenames.
Technically, the process might appear simple. But naming is an art. Not everyone possesses an ability to name an object in one-two words. On artistic terms, this indeed is a very difficult task, as the person on the other end is going to be associated with on a personal level. Still, their offerings do not end here. When a customer comes to them with the idea of getting names, they do the background check for him, in order to ensure that it hasn’t be registered by anyone on the internet. This saves a lot of time for the customers and the authors. In order to publish a project for naming, the customer must pay a minimum of $50 as a reward to the name creator. A reward above $50 may be offered as an incentive and to increase the interest of the authors. The author of winning name will receive the reward. Each idea can receive endless name suggestions, and all that remains is to pick the most ideal name.
In comparison to other such naming services in the States, Domenames offers its services at a price that is four times lower than their competitors. According to American Auditors’ group research its naming service differs from others because of the intuitive ease of using. One of the founders, Alexey Tsapov, is a member of Ukrainian Translators Center, and hence they’re planning to introduce their services in local languages.
