SecPanel is an NCR based startup founded by Rudhir Sharan that has a DIY (Do It Yourself) server security product for SMBs. The company is a part of the Morpheus Gang and recently presented in Boston at a startup event. Having been in the business for more than a year, SecPanel has launched a free to use ‘Rogue IP List’ API as a way to give back to the community.
Talking about this API, Rudhir says, “The rogue IPs are collected by Secpanel from the numerous attacks that it protects against. Our experience is that by blocking these IPs, the possibilities of attacks on your servers can be decreased.” The prevention is best achieved if the IPs are blocked within the first hour of their appearance in this list and the API can help any business with a web facing server.
This IP list can be compared to a police station that has a list of known offenders. It helps them control crime. Similarly, this effort from SecPanel can help the community by acting like a filter that already knows the rogue IPs. One doesn’t need to redo the security checks which have been done by SecPanel if the API is employed. “As a result of protecting thousands of attacks, we gather information about attacks, patterns and sources, which can be incredibly useful in helping other businesses protect their servers. We anonymize this information and then make it available so that they can help protect servers, better,” adds Rudhir. And it works whether you’re using Linux, Windows or any other OS.
The service has been launched as a result of the data collected by the SecPanel protection network over months and you can write to SecPanel to get the APIs. It can be used by anyone (also those not using SecPanel). More information here.
