Remembering a dozen passwords and usernames is a pain. I usually have to keep a note of the note as to where I’ve stored all the confidential logins and ids. Folks at Credool also faced the same problem and decided to solve the problem. Founded by two brothers, Soumyadeb and Rudradeb Mitra, Credool targets the problem and provides a solution.
Online authentication still relies on a technique that was developed decades ago and it is no longer convenient mainly for two reasons:
- It’s not so usable – ask anyone who has to remember dozens of usernames/passwords.
Typing username/password is also hard on devices which don’t have a proper keyboard e.g. your tablet.
- Its insecure – Anyone who knows your password can impersonate you and log into your accounts. Passwords can easily be stolen by malwares and key-loggers. Anti-virus softwares are not always very effective particularly against zero day exploits.
Credool has developed an innovative authentication solution that lets you login to any website from any device using your mobile phone as the authentication key. All you have to do is store all your usernames and passwords in the Credool app and then login using your mobile as the authentication key from any device. “It is convenient to use – you don’t have to remember and type passwords any more. And it’s secure – Passwords never leave the phone in plain-text and hence are secured from any malwares and viruses on your laptop,” says Rudradeb.
Derived from Credentials + Cool, Credool is the creation of two technically sound brothers. Soumyadeb did his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; while Rudradeb started his career as an Artificial Intelligence researcher and worked in Germany, Belgium and Scotland. However, he realized that there is a big difference between developing a “cool” technology and selling the technology. He moved to Cambridge to study at University of Cambridge to get a first-hand experience on technology innovations.
Not being their first startup, the Deb brothers aren’t new to the startup field. The motivation for Credool came from the real problem they faced. “There were just too many enterprise and personal accounts and managing all the identities was a real pain. Studies have shown that on an average a corporate employee has around 20+ personal and corporate accounts making it extremely difficult to remember all the usernames and passwords. Existing password management solutions were not compelling enough. They either stored passwords on the cloud or locally on all the devices (desktops/laptops). Also, the security of all the passwords was based on one ‘master password’ which too made me uncomfortable,” says Rudradeb.
Credool is currently in its beta phase and has an android version. The iOS version will be launched very soon. Regarding monetization, Rudradeb says, “We plan to have the app version free for end users and sell a more advanced version to small and medium enterprises.”
Registered in Delware, USA with David Gill (former head of HSBC technology and innovation and currently director of St John’s innovation center, Cambridge) as an advisor, Credool is a strong force to reckon with.
