Dear Apple, Is India ‘Out of the World’?

iOSI usually use the phrase ‘Out of the World’ in a good connotation – And, mostly I have associated this with good food.

But some how, I got this in my mind, when I got an email from Apple, when they announced “iOS 5 Tech Talk World Tour, 2011” – They have a very exciting talks by experts who developed iOS5 (http://developer.apple.com/techtalk/) – The talks are conducted all over the world!

As Indian Developers, if you are very excited to participate, please don’t be. They are not coming to India. They have sessions in Rome, Sao Paulo, Beijing (I have nothing personal against these places) – But there is not a single place in India that they have a session!

I am personally puzzled with this decision from Apple. Despite a terribly busy day, I spent aside some time thinking why and how this was planned leaving India out. Probably they have some stats which says there are not many iOS developers in India? Even if they don’t have, may be this is a good reason to do it in India to grab developers’ attention.

India is recognized worldwide for her software prowess. I think Apple is making a HUGE mistake by not having India in its radar. I shouldn’t have been surprised in the first place though. Their attitude is quite clear when they don’t get their latest stuff to India, and whenever they bring it, they price it so beyond the reach of even a well-to-do customer.

It is not the same with all other companies – Blackberry launched their new series of phones based on their Blackberry 7 OS in India, even before they launched in US. Not just mobiles, even automobile companies launch products in India before they do a worldwide launch (e.g., Hyundai with i10, eon).

Sriram

Indian consumers have been very discerning and have been extremely rewarding for the right product. Samsung Galaxy SII is selling very well in India. And, Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is difficult to buy off the shelves!

It is totally disgusting that  even a power adaptor you buy for the Mac / Macbook in India, is not  compatible with the sockets here. Apple assumes that the fanboys here will put up with anything they dish out.

Apple –Take India seriously. We reward guys who take us seriously, and we’ll ignore who don’t.  And we are right here, in this world, and not out of it.

    There is just more thing.

It’s a company. it has certain rules. you don’t like the way they treat you well fuck them!

    nobody cares.

the reason you’re angry is because YOU like them and you just want to be respected.

No company respects you unless you’re a source of revenue the things launch paralyzed and expensive in China too (iPhone, iPad’s, iPod’s) ship without wifi there. It’s still their 2nd biggest market in the world.

And India is not on the radar because Indian’s like cheap things.

Apple was never about cheap things. It’s a niche brand with niche products. Can’t afford it get an Android.

Nobody is stopping you from doing such a thing, no force, no distortion field of any kind.

India is not a part of their short term plans, we have a population of over a zillion people but only 10% have cars.

lots of people own phones but 96% of them own phones which are either below 4000 bucks or are from china without IMEI.

And the reason other companies do it cause they have CHEAP shit. Whereas Apple doesn’t. Don’t even expect it to, unless obviously Indian’s stop asking such screwed up questions and until they increase their standard of living – don’t even think about this, trust me.

  2. jayeshb says:

    1. Everything except the phone is launched within a maximum of 2 months.

    2. Ever heard of government policies? Our government policies for importing phones suck. What’s the point of announcing a phone and not shipping it like other companies do.

    3. Also, it’s NOT expensive. I don’t get it why even people LIKE you don’t still get this.

Carriers in US SUBSIDIZE the bloody phone. Apple gets a part of the %

Here call rates are CHEAP + Carriers do NOT want to subsidize.

Go buy an unlocked phone from the states. It’ll cost you 2 grands less.

2k is not an amount when you’re spending 30k for a phone.

    4. And by law any adapter sold in India has to be of specifications. Stop buying your products from the grey market and start buying them from authorized resellers.

    5. Some retard from OUR country sued Apple for using “iTunes” as the only way to sync songs and apps to their devices. If i was apple’s ceo you wouldn’t even be getting an iPod Shuffle.

Also while at the subject do you know why Apple didn’t come to India for their talk?

Cause Indian App Makers SUCK balls. Go look at any Indian app. There is no level of commitment. It’s the “haan chalta hai attitude”

  3. vinayind says:

I don’t agree with the power adapter thing. All Apple products come with India compatible plugs.

  4. Balachandar Muruganantham says:

it seems that author does not understand Apple.

  5. Charan Hari says:

Also, It is quite evident that India isn’t quite a definition of Apple’s view of “Market” – They focus on areas where people can afford to buy their products.

  6. Christin Emmanuel George says:

India does not have an iTunes Store. and Apple Policies does not work with Indian laws. :)

  7. Rishikesh Chhabra says:

Good write! Apple isin’t the only firm to ignore India. If u want a high end ThinkPad like I did, the only solution is to order straight from da States. They only have ONE overpriced under-powered model for the India site. Never figured out why.

  8. sriramv.iyer says:

Fanboys, sorry if I got you ticked off. Didnt mean to.

    1. May be you guys are happy Apple is not coming to India during their World Tour. I am not. I’d love to attend the talks, in India.

    2. We ALL know when iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 was launched in India, and what price. We also know about the sales of iPhone 3GS when it was launched at those price. Please check your facts when you say Apple products are launched almost immediately. They are NOT.

    3. It is company’s prerogative to decide whether to come to India or not. While it is my prerogative to rant. YourStory’s prerogative to publish, and your prerogative to pass on your comments.

    4. Please go and buy an international socket adaptor after you buy a power adaptor for your Apple products in India. I hate it. I’ll say it! I don’t like the habit of taking things lying down.

    5. If there are factual errors, write about it and publish a link here.

  9. DigantaGogoi1 says:

To ignore comes from ignorance, even great emperors have ill afforded to overlook opportunities. The latest faux pas by Apple will renew the Indian spirit to race for the global tech top slot in terms of market & product development.

  10. 2shar says:

@emarshad Said piece lacks fact checking of any sort.

    1. emarshad says:

@2shar Got it! What’s your take on it?!

      1. 2shar says:

@emarshad a) all but their network-based products make it to India within a month of US launch b) the bit about power adapters is tripe

        1. emarshad says:

@2shar that’s good to hear:) and thank you for correcting my perception:)

      2. 2shar says:

@emarshad c) article reeks of self importance – if Apple did see reason – dev base, revenue – to come to India for the TechTalk, it would

      3. 2shar says:

@emarshad d) finally, it is a company’s prerogative to decide which geogs to focus on. Cant afford to get sensationalist/jingoistic abt it

  11. pjain says:

@2shar blah blah blah. Flame bait. @yourstorydotin @nimishdubey

    1. 2shar says:

@pjain Absolutely. So rich I think I feel my arteries clogging up :) @yourstorydotin @nimishdubey

      1. pjain says:

@2shar word! If its that bad, quit using $AAPL prods. P.S. getting a MBA is roughly the same price here as NYC @yourstorydotin @nimishdubey

        1. 2shar says:

@pjain Disturbing trend of sites letting just about anyone write these days. No fact/bias checks. @yourstorydotin @nimishdubey

        2. pjain says:

@2shar I guess not everything can be 5 star all the time. What does it have to do w/ startups anyway? @yourstorydotin @nimishdubey

        3. nimishdubey says:

@pjain @2shar @yourstorydotin What scares me is when I see factual mistakes in well-known publications. People can get misled by such crap.

        4. pjain says:

          @nimishdubey “don’t believe everything you read” @2shar @yourstorydotin
